Competition #2
Hello Everyone,
It is my distinct pleasure to announce the second YYG Developers competition. Following hot on the heels of the very impressive contributions for the winter competition, we haven’t meddled too much with the formula.
The prize pool remains unchanged at $1750 (split between first, second, and third place). We’ve given the developers slightly longer (the deadline is 27.04.08). And the theme is suitably vague – Ancient Civilisation. Take a look at the competition page for more details.
We’re trying to make this competition even bigger than the last one. The more people we tell, the more great games we get out in the end. So please tell your friends (you never know they might share the prize money ;] ). Also, please use the big Digg link on the competition page and let the whole Geek world know.
In other news, we’ve made a few changes to the site architecture; hopefully you all noticed the improved speed. More to come.
Good luck,
Jim

The site’s speed was greatly improved. I’m sure we’ve all noticed.

Awesome. I’ll enter this one!
Just. Awesome! I need to decide on what type of game to make, though…

“prize pool remains unchanged at $1750″
It says on the competition page that the 2nd prize is 750$. Is that wrong or am I missing something?
And yeah, the site has been faster.

Finally, the second. Lets see how it goes then
February 1st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Agh, hoped to be able to participate in the second competition… but Ancient Civilizations just ain’t my style…
February 1st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
“However, we do ask that the entrants themselves do not rate competition games (on pain of disqualification!).”
Maybe it will stop the ratings abuse this time round.
Oh brilliant
February 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Argh… Opposite end of the spectrum for me there Jim.
I just started getting deep into my futuristic game.

“…Competition entrants must not rate competition games. Any competitor rating a competition game will be disqualified.”
What if we accidentally rate a game or we don’t think we’ll enter, but change our mind?
“After publishing the game, post in the relevant competition forum page…”
Where is this?
February 1st, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Should we make a game anout an ancient civilisation that actually existed?

“What if we accidentally rate a game or we don’t think we’ll enter, but change our mind?”
Try not to do that :]
“It says on the competition page that the 2nd prize is 750$. Is that wrong or am I missing something?”
Nope, sadly that was just a typo, sorry guys!

Can you please do a .pdf or .txt copy of the rules?
I don’t currently have Microsoft Office on my PC so I can’t see the new rules. If you can’t, then I’ll try opening the .doc file with WordPad or Open Office or something.
February 2nd, 2008 at 4:39 am
WordPad will open the document.
February 2nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I must know: does it have to be a civilisation that actually existed?
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:13 am
I can’t open the doc, even adobe won’t open it. I’m not sure what your talking about WordPad being able to because it won’t.
February 3rd, 2008 at 12:32 pm
i will make a ancient puzzle game, but not the way you would expect a puzzle too be so an unordinary yet fun and new kind of puzzle style game.
February 3rd, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I’m making The Tribe of Nable, Featuring The Attack of the Smes

Except that my WordPad does, since I don’t have Word nor OpenOffice.

Probably warriorccc0 is runnig under Vista. I red that wordpad in it is disabled to read .doc files. Nasty M$-it. Use some other stuff. Use abiword, it is free: http://www.abisource.com and can open doc files. It would be better if Yoyo put the rules in rtf, instead of doc!!!
February 4th, 2008 at 2:04 am
There was a PDF version of the rules with the last competition. Don’t know why that wasn’t done this time around.
warriorccc0, Microsoft also has WordViewer, which is free.

I just installed it, and it opened the DOC.

My only qualm with the new rules is that I’m concerned about having the number of plays be a direct weight.
Previously play count was just “considered” but if it becomes an objective point value that gives early entrants an enormous advantage.

The only problem with the contest is that it’s too high level, I’ve told some about the contest, but they won’t make a game because they have no chance at all for winning :/

How ancient is ancient? I mean, could we do victorian era europe (300 years) such as the french revolution and napolean, vikings attacking (9-12 hundred years ago), or does it have to be bce, etc. Did the ancient civilisation have to exist (for instance, an atlantis like civilisation, a steampunk civilistation, etc.) What about a game in which our pressent world is but a ancient long dead civilisation? Please clarify.
