Game Maker 4 Apple Mac Update
Caniac ….are you there ???
Finally, finally….we have a release of the Apple Mac version of Game Maker that is just about ready to go into a PRIVATE beta. We have limited testing resource of our own and this is a very early beta, so we will open up the number of testers slowly until we’re certain not to be overwhelmed by bug reports !!
The beta will start before the end of November. If you want to take part then send your contact details including your GMC and YYG aliases as well as your preferred email address to :-
applebeta@yoyogames.com
Note this is a “catch all” alias…so don’t expect to get a reponse to any questions you might have …this is purely to apply to join the beta.

While I don’t care much about GM being on Mac, I’m very pleased to see that something involving the Game Maker program has actually got done. Well done YYG!
Is there a chance of a Linux port any time soon?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Do you need a mac computer to be a beta tester?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
@timoi No decision has been made to do this. Though the Mac port ought to run on Unix (BSD at least) without too much effort, it’s currently not in our plans.
@CheddixCorp. Yes, currently we would ask that you have an Intel based Mac running Leopard, though it seems to work on other configurations we want to focus testing on OSX based Macs to start with.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Where’s Caniac…he must be around here somewhere.
I for one am very busy with lots of other stuff like school and sports, so I won’t be able to test.
I am glad that YoYo is progressing with respect to GM for Mac.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
does this mean theres an instant play for mac aswell???
November 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
This is great news. I would sign up for the beta, but I currently do not have a mac… Oh well.
But, it’s great to hear that there has been some serious progress.
November 10th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
ROFL,
I am here guys
thanks sandy
hmmmm, can I sign up, and do it with a friend,
cause I know a few people that are interested in this.

That’s awesome for the Mac users! ^_^ At least they can make games now in Mac.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Will the release of the Mac Version be known as Gm8? or still Gm7? or even 7.1?
November 10th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Finally we got some good news on the development sides of GM.

if YoYo is not shark in the marketing business then they are the food but if you want to become the shark you will need more help from the company MR.SMES! and to become larger and stronger and better.

Just a random comment: I’m not sure, but I think that this is the first non-competition YYG Glog post to refer to a player by name. Anyway, I think that this Mac port is a huge step towards making GM a much more common thing.

Hurrah for GM :]
Great job guys, I’ll be getting my own copy–yay for roommates with a mac!
November 11th, 2008 at 4:24 am
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has taken 14 months to make it (since YoYo announced it!!!)
November 11th, 2008 at 5:05 am
This almost makes me wish I had a Mac… Almost… Truly good work though, I hope this widens Game Makers audience and allows more people to develop great games!
November 11th, 2008 at 5:31 am
I have a question. Will GM for Mac be for both PowerPC and Intel?
November 11th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Admittingly, I really want a Linux version more then a Mac one. But that’s completely irrelevant at the moment and I wont ask for it seeing the Mac version is being worked upon.
However, I was curious to know whether now that there’s a Mac version in beta, will it be easier to port Game Maker to Linux seeing both Mac and Linux are obviously UNIX based and use OpenGL for graphics rendering.
Thanks.
November 11th, 2008 at 7:22 am
@ LostOverThere: I’m sure it would make it a lot easier to make the port although I’m not sure that they will due to the number of users… Then again I never thought there was enough Mac users.
November 11th, 2008 at 7:40 am
I’ll ignore ur idiotic childish comments twits.
November 11th, 2008 at 8:14 am
@LostOverThere: Yes, we could probably do a Linux port using teh Mac version. In fact we’ve had it up and running, but we want to get a stable Mac version before we start stretching ourselves.
@Philsempire: We haven’t tested on PowerPC, but we hope it will work. We will only support Intel based Macs.
@lukearentz; It’s definitely GM 7, but we might do some more work to make it feel a bit more Mac like with changes to menus etc, so it might end up looking a little different.
@supercrson7: No plans for instant play at the moment. Many of the reasons for having it in the first place don’t exist on Mac.
November 11th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Ahh that’s good to hear. Another quick Q: How is this going to handle the compatibility of extensions and also the compatibility of .dll
I assume that the .dll will not work for a Mac, what is the Equivalent going to be on the Mac?
November 11th, 2008 at 11:58 am
@Me2:
14 months isn’t that long. Its taken 9+ years for it to get to GM7
And its not actually Yoyo who is making it. They can’t hurry up the process.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
You would probably have to recompile it for PowerPC, because I think Intel Macs use 64-bit processors and PPC can’t run i686 junk.
Probably all it would take is a few minutes (or longer; make can take a while) to recompile all of your files on Tiger.
November 11th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Am I the only person here who doesn’t own a single PC? I’ve been anxiously awaiting this good news. I’m all mac so I have been waiting for this port. Hopefully I will be part of the private beta so I can finally use game maker on my mac once and for all (other than WINE). Windows game maker games don’t work under wine so I will finally be able to test my games.
November 11th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
so uhh…
Will it work on a PC?
Will i have to start everything over or will my gmks be 100% compatible with gm mac?
What will be the price?
If we switch from gm7 to gm8 does it cost?
November 11th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I rushed. I was asking for beta version of GM8 instead of mac port.
And I believe as with the other versions the migration from gm7 to 8 will be free, i presume.
Will it however cost us to migrate from windows version to mac?
Thanks.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
@gmgex If you don’t use extensions (DLLs) we hope to get 99% compatibility. Might be some funnies since we are using OpenGL and NOT Direct/X !
@lukearentz: It won’t work with DLLs (of course)
November 11th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Thats a good question, will we be able to switch our current GMK’s over to the Mac version or not?
And a Linux version would be nice, we would be able to make games for any PC system (almost anyway).
November 11th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
also good news on the OpenGL part.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
@ilsoap: I have no idea. GM7 to GM8 is ate least a year away. When I see how much it costs and who is supporting us financially, then I’ll make the call on whether the upgrade is free. I also have made no decision on Mac. Some of this is due to ongoing discussions with Apple …. we also need to see if we have a quality implementation first !
November 11th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Is this the actual game making program on a mac, able to make games for macs, or will the windows one be able to make games for windows and mac? Or both?
I’d rather see the windows version able to make mac games.
November 11th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Finally, a chance to test it opn my new MacBook Pro! ^^
November 11th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
@Sandy,
I have a few questions,
1)
is it possible to “cancel” your allpication for becoming a beta tester”
2)
how long do we have to submit an application?
November 11th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
darn, stupid spelling errors.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:20 am
looks like Nailog will be getting the white wash out of his job soon
because he will be fired when I am hired if he doesn’t change his attitude and I’ll be executive thus in charge of the manager even.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:23 am
ts Nailog ur either changing ur attitude or losing ur job.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:40 am
what?
whats up with Nailog? whered you hear he’s gonna be fired? and who said you were gonna get “hired”? its a volunteer job.
@Sandy,
so, in the next “Windows” version of GM, will there be a “Export mac exe” button?
November 12th, 2008 at 1:58 am
@Caniac
Macs don’t use .EXE, They use .APP
November 12th, 2008 at 2:19 am
@rab236
I think Caniac meant a mac executable. It would be great if the Mac GM would export EXE files and the Windows GM would export APP files. That way people using one OS would be able to make games for both operating systems.
November 12th, 2008 at 3:20 am
@sandy: Will you be wanting feedback on Maclikeness? That is probably the area I’d be most useful (read: annoying).
Also, will the Windows version move to OpenGL? If so, will there be added benefits?
@Bob the BlueBerry: Compiling a Universal Binary (an executable that works on PPC and Intel) is a matter of checking a box, but what we don’t know is whether the code written CAN be compiled on PPC. There are a bunch of frameworks and methods that make coding a lot easier, but that work only on Intel. Some programs can ONLY be written thanks to these frameworks and methods. The various Windows virtualizers (VMWare, Parallels) are examples of this. Game Maker uses amazing code voodoo in that it compiles executables itself and is (now) cross-platform. It’s possible that this code voodoo relies on Intel tricks, and it’s probable it would be simplified by them. Fingers crossed, though! Without PPC support, my games won’t have much of an audience.
If it DOES work, compiling for both takes twice the time and results in a binary twice the size.
@rab236: I got a Mac when my PC died, so we’re in the same boat! I got Boot Camp and subsequently Darwine and subsequently VMWare but it’s just not the same. Boot Camp requires rebooting, Darwine doesn’t run games, VMWare slows my machine and doesn’t run games at full speed.
November 12th, 2008 at 3:23 am
@wade.mcgillis
App bundles, not app files! Mac applications are actually folders with extensions.
[/pedantry]
November 12th, 2008 at 5:14 am
Questions to be answered:
1.) Will Windows GM be able to compile to Mac (and vice-versa)? The most logical solution seems to be to combine the two programs but the implementation may be too much.
2.) If not, how will windows-only users be able to create a mac file to host on their website/share/etc?
3.) Will instant-play be compatible with both Mac and PC made games, or will there have to be separation between the two?
4.) Are there even any plans yet to upgrade GM past the mac port? Can you give a little info?
I do like that we have a mac port coming, but unless the process of compiling a mac version is simple I can’t see myself bothering, although I haven’t really been keeping up with what’s going on.
November 12th, 2008 at 5:24 am
@wade.mcgillis
I know very well they don’t use .exes. I remember a few years ago, I proudly marched over to a friends house (who had a mac) and I felt really dumb when it said “Unknown file type”… but I didn’t know what they used, so I put “Mac exe” not ‘*.exe’…
@rab236
thanks, I will remember that.
November 12th, 2008 at 9:02 am
So many questions. I will respond “@all”.
1. Nailog is my hero. He is NOT being fired and stop spamming the Glog. Pls stay on topic.
2. The plan is to go back to a single game maker program in GM8 that runs on BOTH Mac and Windows. We may never get there, depends on what language we choose to develop GM in. Current favourite would be C#, but that would not allow us to develop simultaneously for Mac. We definitely envisage a GM8 that allows you to target multiple platfrms. iPhone, Android and PSP are the current favourites.
3. Compatability. If you don’t use DLLs then there’s a good chance your game will “compile” in the Mac version without any changes. We tested this with one of the biggest games on the site and it runs…though it exposed a few bugs for us ! Mac games will almost certainly “compile” on Windows.
4. We definitely use OpenGL.
5. There’s no formal “opt out” of the Apple Beta program. Nobody is forced to participate. Those of you who don’t file bug reports may not receive updates to the beta, but we’ll probably ask you first !
November 12th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Sandy, do you plan on using a more dynamic inteface for gamemaker, maybe following a design like Adobe Photoshop, with windows that can be placed and moved?
I’ve always prefered interfaces like those.
November 12th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I could keep Nailog in the company if I get hired and help even introduce a new product or 2 to make the company even richer these plans could really benefit the company, but not telling them 2 u until I get hired.
November 12th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
@sandy: No offense but Nailog really has to shape up, his attitude he makes such over reactions he needs to calm down a little and clear that off a bit, and now I hear your working 4 Microsoft as one of there spies at the same time I think I have enough rights to take the tycoons out of business and is that even legal for a co-director to do in a company. I don’t think so, so I think KO-ing the tycoons and helping this company out of debt here which it deserves but you will get payed 8 times the amount you get at Microsoft if you quit, and be manager I’ll be executive and take care of the rest and the ideas and plans for the company, to make it more successful.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
@mrsmes
JUST STOP POSTING! NOBODY WANTS YOU! You are less than noob. You Should get the hint from the comments and the lack of being contacted by mark and sandy! If they were interested the would have probably replied to one of your first three million posts! I just have one question. (no offense to yyg) Why focus on YoYoGames? a small company where only 3 people work at. why focus here if you’re aiming high towards microsoft and apple? this company isn’t the most well known. why yyg?
November 12th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I know they are folders. Like jar files. but those are zipped.
@sandy
Will multiplayer games made with windows (the mplay functions) be able to connect to the mac games?
November 12th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I know that windows GM uses directx
November 12th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
@msrmes,
where did you get the idea thatyou are going to be a mod?
when I had been a member for only a few DAYS, I PMed all the mods and admins, and got the same response over and over. (wait a few years, and don’t ask mods for tips, cause that moves you backwards)
sandy was the only one that gave me a _helpful_ reply, but after that he never responded. but seriously,
I am not saying that I am the _best_ of examples, but the way you post, talk etc. should scream “MAKE ME A MOD” you should never add in your sig “make me a mod” or anything like that.
behave well,
get LOTS of posts, just make a pledge to make lets say, 5 posts per day, no matter what forum, and you will be surprised how fast they go up,
ALSO,
report bad posts when you see them, that seems to please the mods
make sure you adress each mod personally, by putting in “%N” (I think that changes to the persons username, but I could be wrong.
@Sandy,
awesome, I am glad to hear that “the best game on the site” compiles with few bugs,
btw, what would that game be?
and sorry for spamming the glog
@Wade,
the answer is one word, and has only one sylobol.

[...] in the YoYo Games Glog Post “Game Maker 4 Apple Mac Update” [...]
November 12th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
@Caniac
You do realize that if YoYoGames changes the multiplayer functions of Game Maker to be more free (like 39DLL) and not have to follow the format of DirectPlay, then GM would be able to communicate across platforms easily.
Think about this:
Why can you visit webpages on Macs AND PCs?
Or use AIM
November 12th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Sorry for double posting.
@Sandy
Do the 3D functions in the Mac version still start with d3d_* ?
November 12th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
@wade
I think that they will. Now this is not entirely a guess. Chances are the function names are going to stay the same, its the code behind the functions that will be different. If they change the function names it will make Cross.Gmk a lot more difficult.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
@wade,
webpages can be viewed my windows and macs, because HTML does not change over the platforms.
each browser simply interprets the html, and shows it.
things like Aim and Flash etc. are written on one platform, then they are recoded for the other platforms.
November 13th, 2008 at 12:27 am
@Caniac
I KNOW AIM IS RECODED FOR EACH PLATFORM. Flash isn’t. The flash runner is. People who make flash games don’t make different games for each OS. Just like GML wouldn’t be changed for each OS.
But, why do the messages from Windows AIM look the same on Mac AIM?
Tell me why they are the same if AIM is different and recoded.
You obviously don’t understand data being sent between computers.
November 13th, 2008 at 1:23 am
There is no ‘Mac EXE’. Mac uses Unix Executable Files (quite similar to Linux ones, I do believe).
.app ‘files’ are not really files at all but folders. Finder just tricks you into thinking they are files.
That’s what I hate about Mac. It tries to hide the Unix part of it which makes it hard to develop on.
- Bob
November 13th, 2008 at 3:45 am
@Bob,
I know that. I stand corrected. now do people need to keep saying it?
@Wade,
you obviously don’t understand.
the computers don’t talk directly to eachother, they talk to a server.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:42 am
@Bob: Right click, show package contents. Finder tries to make it easier for users, with a minor inconvenience for develpers. A tradeoff well worth it.
@Sandy:
I have a few questions about the beta:
1. What’s the secrecy level?
1: We may blog about the beta, discuss it with anyone and create and release games at our own risk if there are bugs.
2: Blogging and discussing any part of the beta with anyone is allowed, but we are asked not to release games yet.
3: We may discuss with anyone in private conversation, but not publicly.
4: We may only discuss the beta with other beta testers.
5: We must not discuss any part of the beta with anyone except YoYo Games.
Or a varaiation of above?
I have lot’s more questions, but I think I can work them out myself after it’s released.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:51 am
1st step become mod, 2nd step get the trust of these hatred people and teach them how 2 do it, n rock their game on and bring the fight 2 competition. 3rdly if the Alert button was not broken I would Alert moderators and do the appropriate thing instead of dealing with the situation myself, but I step in where I feel it’s appropriate I can deal with some people but when they walk the line then hit Alert.
November 13th, 2008 at 9:07 am
I’m getting a few too many tech questions for me….answer is sign up for the beta, wait until next week and see.
@mrsmes, rab236 STAY on topic…last warning.
@Dangerous_Dave
1. dunno where you’re from but there’s a real life “Dangerous Dave” who lives in London. I’ve met him and believe me he’s Dangerous !! http://www.davecourtney.com if you’re interested (I’m not !) btw I also know there was a game called DD as well !
2. No major restrictions on the beta. You can blog about it if you want to. I ask mainly that you report bugs to us as often as possible(we will give you special access to the reporting tool), and that you don’t distribute the Mac Game Maker to other folks. We’ll be pretty generous about widely distributing a later beta as soon as we can.
@Warriorccc0 DS is still on our radar screen. Problem we face is the porting cost of the runner. If we do iPhone, then it costs very little to do Android (the technology is fundamentally the same and if there’s a call missing on Android, then we could theoretically extend the OS if we had to). PSP is also technically fairly similar. Our challenge on any of these is more tuning than compatibility. DS is different, the 2 screens are technically harder to handle etc, so for now it’s a lower priority but this could change overnight, depending on various conversations we’re having. The $10,000 “publisher fee” is not a barrier.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
The data being sent is still the same.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
@sandy,
not to sound all smart, and make a fight, but out of curiocity, how is the 10 grand fee not a barrier…?
November 13th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Wade is sort of right…
if you create a file with the extension *.opt (just random letters i put there, really)
and you sent it to both Mac OS and Windows OS and they viewed it with some sort of file viewer they would both see the same message.
This works also with all the .(gamemakerfiles)
November 14th, 2008 at 12:17 am
what if I told you I could remove this fee from being a barrier thanks to a newer product on the line if you accept me as the executive of the company.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:26 am
@Caniac,
There are many people that $10,000 isn’t a barrier to. You have to spend money to make money. Obviously Sandy wouldn’t have taken his position at YoYoGames if it wasn’t lucrative. YoYoGames obviously would need some incentive to put down $10,000 to extend Game Maker to work with the NintendoDS, iPhone, PSP, etc.. The hope is that by spending the $10,000 they earn a lot more back. When you look at it this way $10,000 becomes less of a barrier and more of an opportunity.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:26 am
yes, a product able to make $40,000 in less than a month.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:54 am
did anyone read the page I sent?
here is a direct quote for ya’ll.
Developer Qualifications: An Authorized Developer will have demonstrated the ability to develop and program excellent software for Nintendo video game systems or for other game platforms. In addition, an Authorized Developer will have a stable business organization with secure office facilities separate from a personal residence ( Home offices do not meet this requirement ), sufficient resources to insure the security of Nintendo confidential information and in order to ensure an effective environment for working with Nintendo and/or its Publishers. Nintendo provides Authorized Developers with highly confidential information and many of Nintendo’s Publishers also rely on recommendations and referrals to Authorized Developers. For these reasons, Nintendo exercises a very high level of care in evaluating Authorized Developers.
read that.
most GM users use the computer at their house. that does not meet the requirements.
awww forget it.
read this page:
http://www.warioworld.com/apply/
November 14th, 2008 at 4:55 am
Wow. mrsmes hasn’t been listening at all. He is SO going to get banned! Anyways, I think this great! I applyed for it.
Hopefully I can get my hands on my friends MacBook.
I think that rewriting GM in C++, or another cross-platform language might take a while (I’m seriously anticipating the next GM!
) but it will most likely be worth it. Being able to make games for my school’s Linux and Mac computers (not like I’m able to go on them, or anything
) would be nice; and most of my friends for some reason like Macs better. Most of them. One of my totally non-geeky friends totally HATES Macs, for whatever reason. I think he just hates the layout, and that pivot doesn’t work on them.
@Caniac: nice link! I never knew any of that stuff.
November 14th, 2008 at 5:21 am
@ Sandy:
1. Nope, that’s not me
, I’m still pretty dangerous though…
2. Cool, sounds good. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time
@Caniac:
I think YoYo Games may negotiate a little with these companies. As GM on these platforms could boost sales (due to a much larger number of games, and free ones) it would most likely be worth their time to listen to YYG. But that also depends on their business strategy (if they make nothing by selling the console/handheld, and make their profits from the game sales, then they are less likely to be interested than if they made a nice profit from the console/handheld sales).
November 14th, 2008 at 11:38 am
I’ll calm down but I only want to help.
November 14th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
@AGWS,
thanks, it took me forever to find that page for the first time. I hope someday that I can do that as a living.
@D_D,
don’t get me wrong, I am ALL FOR a GM “export ‘*.ds’ file, I just want to make sure that nobody is going to get into trouble.
Aside from that,
do you think nintendo wants 1,000 noobs selling DS games that look exactly like their games, for less, stetaling their profits?
November 14th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Sandy…are you there ???
November 14th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
@caniac…I’m always here
November 14th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
@Sandy,
so are there any plans for future wii support?
November 14th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
@Sandy
if you are planning to make GM for the Wii or the DS go here: http://www.warioworld.com/ . It’s a site where you can sign up to be a Nintendo developer.
November 14th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
@Caniac
Nintendo would have to license games made for their consoles.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:01 am
@Rab, I know
and I allready linked to that site.
but as they seem to have that problem covered, I was just curious.

@D_D,
don’t get me wrong, I am ALL FOR a GM “export ‘*.ds’ file, I just want to make sure that nobody is going to get into trouble.

I’m sure YoYo has legal advice from actual legal people (laywers).

As I said before, it depends if they make money from the games, or just from the console sales. 25,000 extra games can’t be all bad.

I am sure they wo’t mind console sales, but competition for their mario games….
I am not so sure
November 15th, 2008 at 11:54 am
your all for export but are you for “support” and making the company better, if u r just hire me as executive.
November 15th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
your scentence flow makes no sense to me.
November 15th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
i have an idea for GM8(I Skipped through everything…) on the game maker download page it asks if you want the Windows Port Or Mac. and if you go to File It will have “Create .App” And “Create .Exe”. and when you upload the game to yoyo there’s a button “Upload Mac Port” and “Upload Win. Port” and “Both”
ALSO! if it could have “Create XBOX 360 game” and “Playstation 3 game” THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!
November 15th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
sharlowidalot, Don’t make me shoot you.
What makes you think it can instantly work with Xbox 360 or even the Playstation 3? We are talking about the Mac, and your idea isn’t original at all.
November 16th, 2008 at 12:19 am
You are all for export and newer ideas and products and projects to make more money for YoYo Games and faster, and export but in order to obtain it you need more support but I am the only one here offering to help and lend a hand so let’s swing with the band and into the competition and get our game on and hire a executive every company needs one and has one and a co director I would volunteer to be executive…
November 16th, 2008 at 1:49 am
@mrsmes: You aren’t the only one offering help. You’re just the only annoying one. 1. They already have a company. 2. They already have an executive (though they don’t call them that
) 3. You have almost no right whatsoever to request any of those things, or even volunteer.
@sharlow idiot *cough cough* I mean, idalot: Reading through the whole topic might have helped. *rolls eyes*

@caniac….beta should be out this week. I did say we wouldn’t “auto respond to your request !
November 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
@Sandy,
ok, I thought that there would be some “noreply@yoyogames.com” bot telling me my application was accepted, and is under review, but I guess not.
I hope the beta comes out soon, my friend and I are dying to try it out.
November 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Caniac, you post some random rubbish you know… Some would consider you just one level above MrSmes.
November 18th, 2008 at 3:30 am
@Caniac: Yes there is; listen to the anti-sad song on Karoshi 2.0 and the Phunq (that’s funk) on Karoshi 2.0.
@lukearentz: As true as it may be, it’s still mean. Besides, so was that post. Complete rubbish.
@sandy: Is there any specific version of Mac we need to test this on? I might be able to get onto an iMac, but an eMac only if I’m REALLY lucky.

Are you guys trying to be the ones responsible for getting smilies removed from the glog?
November 20th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Me?
no, I was just wondering why people are using them like crazy.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
AGW…I’m here ….NO SPAM DUDE !
Quick update. Beta will go live later today, more likely tomorrow. If you sent us a mail, then you are likely to be included, BUT we have had so many requests we will not take any more for at least a week, maybe longer.
ALSO there will be a Glog re-skin, provided by the community, very soon….more later.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Hurray! Its just luck that my brother left his Mac home while he’s not at college this week!
November 21st, 2008 at 2:44 am
Okay, okay. I’m sorry. I just like all these smileys! You don’t get to use them on YYG, so using them here is the next best thing!
November 21st, 2008 at 3:48 am
awesome!
I am glad.
glog reskin?
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:20 am
@sandy
how will we know that we were included? will we get an email with the download link? what happens?
November 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 am
@rab236…I wasn’t in the office Friday. When I was leaving Thursday night Jim was putting together an email. There may have been a delay getting the bug reporting service started and I told Jim not to release the beta without it. I haven’t heard form Jim….so if you didn’t get an email by now…it won’t happen until Monday.
November 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 am
I applied for the beta and haven’t received an email, so I guess that means waiting till Monday. No big deal. Then again, Mrsmes wouldn’t take weekends off!
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
XD,
I was wondering.
ok, I will wait.
November 22nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I sent an email too. I’d LOVE to try the beta. The anticipation is KILLING me!!!
November 23rd, 2008 at 10:16 am
If you sent a mail, then you will get the beta. Sorry we missed the weekend.
November 23rd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Its great guys!
I cant wait to start filling the bug reports to help you out!
thanks for sending it to me!
November 23rd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
THANKYOU!
I thought the day would never come that the mac version would be out.
November 23rd, 2008 at 6:36 pm
I downloaded the runner, but I can’t open a “Game Maker Game File”… all files are disabled and there is no help file included..?
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:04 pm
I have the same problem as lapixx. please help me I really want to use this.
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
What version of osX are you using?
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 pm
10.5.5
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Me too btw, the latest version of Leopard atm.
In the dialog, it says “Enable: Game Maker Game Files”, normally disabling all other file types, but it doesn’t seem to recognize any *.gm6, *.gmk, *gb1 or *.exe files. I assume you have to select a GMK file, right? Otherwise, what should I do?
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I also received a beta and i am having problems, I’m running the latest version of the Os 10.5.5 and it wont let me open Game Maker Game Files.
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
exact same with me. I have tried to run executables and .gmk’s but none can be chosen. I also right clicked both an exe and a gmk and chose “open with” and picked “yoyo70″ but nothing came up.
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pm
i sandy or anyone else here that can help us?
November 23rd, 2008 at 7:29 pm
i don’t know how to check if people are online…
November 23rd, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Same problem here, leopard 10.5.5
November 23rd, 2008 at 10:32 pm
I think we can all agree that the runner does not work, or we are using it wrong.
Anyway, we’ll just need to wait until we get a response.
November 23rd, 2008 at 11:14 pm
man i want to use this
November 23rd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
no Dlls dang can you make it work with Dlls or make more funtions?
November 24th, 2008 at 12:39 am
The date the app was modified is 23/05/08. I guess we’ve been directed to the wrong file.
November 24th, 2008 at 12:56 am
woah dude your right. damn it
November 24th, 2008 at 1:57 am
Yeah… Dunno what happened, but nothing on my computer works in the file (I’m running 10.5.5 Leopard). *.gm6/*.gmk/*.gmd/*.exe don’t work.
@sharprm
Hey, nice find!
November 24th, 2008 at 3:03 am
Actually, I might be wrong. If you rename the file from .app to something else, it allows you to see files inside and at least one has been modified in November. Guess better wait till Sandy says what’s going on.
November 24th, 2008 at 3:09 am
what else would you change it to besides app?
November 24th, 2008 at 3:12 am
Right click-> show package contents. No neep to rename. But if you were going to rename, you would remove the extention;
November 24th, 2008 at 3:49 am
oh, i still have alot to learn about macs
November 24th, 2008 at 7:23 am
I couldn’t open any of games in .gmk .gm6 or .exe. Plus, I thought you were releasing Game Maker, not a runner. I am using Tiger 10.4.10 but soon upgrading to Leopard.
November 24th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Correct me if I’m wrong… but it should not run .exe’s. For one, Macs dont uses exes, they use apps, as was already discussed here.
As for the .gmk, .gm6, etc. That may be an intentional restriction; since the mac version of GM has differences in it’s abilities it’s reasonable to believe that it would have its own file type.
However I’m not on a mac, nor have I tried the mac software, so maybe I’m just mumbling gibberish.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I would expect the GM* file to be gmk. There is no data in the file that is operating system specific. It appears the runner is looking for a data file, which are not legally publicly available. This is the file that the runner reads the data from for the game. Maybe we have been givin the wrong file? Maybe we should ask Mr NoobFarm how he got it to work, as he appears to be the only one.
November 24th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
The only difference I can see is im running on a G4 not Intel…. im using Panther….
I’ll fool around with it later today on a different machine.
November 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
yeah, my friend on his mac (they are both 1,000 miles away from me, sadly)
is also having trouble with it too
November 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I tried it on a G4 with leopard and it doesn’t work either. Probably if it works for you Noobfarm, it’s a OS related problem
November 24th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
-hmmm-
well soon i will have that other mac… and we will see…
November 24th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Ok, just tried it on Lep.
Same problem as everyone else.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
I wasn’t sent the beta :O
I can wait XD
November 24th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Im gbloging on a glob site sweet. Ive got a question when does the apple beta end.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Received the email, dowloaded the file, beta not running for me either…
November 25th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Same here. I’m running Mac OS X on a 15″ MacBook Pro. When I start the application I get a window asking me to open and existing file.
November 25th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Try again ? There should have been 2 files…Maker and Runner…they are now both on the beta test server. You need to copy both files to the same folder.
November 25th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Got it. I now have maker and runner. Maker opened up with no problems. I’ll have some feedback after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanks.
November 25th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Can you send me the thing… I sent two emails and got no beta
November 26th, 2008 at 12:18 am
I got it, and I already have a list of things to report. XD I hope the bug reporting system is set up soon. …Or is it up already and I just don’t know where/what it is?
November 26th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Hey, if you renamed the runner from .app to something else, and you find that you can’t compile an executable in macgamemaker, then try re-downloading the runner. It started working when i had redownloaded the runner.
Which idiot told people to rename from .app???
November 26th, 2008 at 2:27 am
You could just add the .app extension back and voila! It works again!
Man it looks bad… I hope there’s going to be some work on the look. It needs to be more mac-like. And even if it was windows it would still look bad… oh and preferences should go in the menua named after the program (ie GameMaker IDE), thats how it is in all mac programs.
November 26th, 2008 at 3:26 am
how do you go pro? i have a windows gm7 registration key but i guess the registration system isn’t up yet.
November 26th, 2008 at 3:51 am
What is there that’s restricted to pro? I ran a 3D game fine, no pro required.
November 26th, 2008 at 4:26 am
These are the errors. Maybe i did something else besides rename .app extension to screw things up (yes i did change it back dave).
Failed to copy YoYo70 from /Users/s/Desktop/gamemaker/gamemaker2/Game Maker.app/Contents/MacOS/../../../. Error : 256
or:
Unable to create file */gm_ttt_24114/a7202.app/
Contents/Resources/a7202.g70
Anyway downloading new runner solved problem.
November 26th, 2008 at 4:48 am
They have to both be in the same folder. I never got an error with mine (and there’s no reason to).
November 26th, 2008 at 7:42 am
WHOA !!…I want to call a halt to using this blog to capture feedback. For now, stick to the bug reporting system and stick to reporting bugs. I also need to have a bunch of good games to take to Apple on December 1st. Jim should have given instructions on uploading games to the site ? If not I will post here later today.
November 26th, 2008 at 8:51 am
I only got 1 email and don’t have instructions for bug reporting or uploading.
So, you want “good” games in 5 days? Just ‘cos I’m greedy, are you offering cash incentives or relying on community spirit for this?
November 26th, 2008 at 9:26 am
I tested every file I had on my computer (which was about a dozen). I found 1 game that ran without any real issues. I have a lot to say, but I also never recieved any info on bug reporting.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Just tried Game Maker for Mac, seems to work pretty good!
I can’t wait to port Go Up this weekend!
November 26th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
I just checked my email again. There should be a new email sent this morning with info on reporting bugs.
…I’m assuming that when it says you should ‘only report bugs for games which you have created yourself,’ that it’s only referring to when you’re reporting bugs in games and not that you shouldn’t report any bugs that occur in the Game Maker itself.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Okay, I’m having another kind of problem. The email says where to go to report bugs, but it didn’t mention what to log in with to get there. I’ve tried all the login info I can think of that might apply and couldn’t get in. Password retrieval also didn’t work.
November 27th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
ya, I have the same problem.. I don’t know how to report any bugs
November 27th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
also, the mac beta seems to work really great, i’ve tried all the functions in the unregistered version ( i dont think the reg version is out) and have had no problems or errors…
November 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Bug system not working
November 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
it just says “Your account may be disabled or blocked or the username/password you entered is incorrect.”
November 28th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Got the latest email and signed up. I think now I need access to the correct project, though. (One email says I should report bugs under ‘GM Mac.’ The closest I can access at the moment is ‘GM7 Bugs.’)
November 29th, 2008 at 12:08 am
Did they email the beta, that’s a shame.
Was looking forward to testing it out. =[
November 29th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I entered the beta way earlier why haven’t I received the beta.
November 30th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Sandy Sorry this message isn’t about reporting bugs but I really want to try this game maker beta I have a mac OS X and my pc is broken so I really want the game maker 4 mac PLZ
December 1st, 2008 at 1:58 am
So you know, just because you applied to enter beta testing, doesn’t mean that you WILL be accepted as a beta tester, particularly at first. (”…we will open up the number of testers slowly until we’re certain not to be overwhelmed by bug reports !!”) They may also look for certain things when choosing who gets in as a beta tester, like maybe they want a the kinds of Macs tested on (Intel vs PPC, OS 10.2 vs OS 10.5 etc.) to be fairly even.
So, just be patient. You might be accepted later. (And if you can get your PC fixed, I’d suggest just getting the PC version at this point; the current beta is probably riddled with bugs, and the PC version has all the same features, except they all should work.)
December 1st, 2008 at 2:40 am
ok I understand I have version 10.5 btw
December 7th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
This looks cool. I want to participate.
I have an old iMac running the latest.
December 14th, 2008 at 2:08 am
Can this run on non intel macs? Im running on a 2 Ghz PowerPC with 512 KB RAM.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I don´t know if somebody has already made this question, but, when will we see the Windows beta?
December 24th, 2008 at 6:29 am
*survives stab and barely does a scratch on mrsmes* could the product be used on Windows to make applications for other OS’s like mac, and Linux if it can my product i came up with, with $pecter and myself is really cooking with fire.

Wow, that took quite a while.
First, let’s get this out of the way:
mrsmes is clearly very thick-headed and doesn’t get a message easily but I will try, nonetheless:
YYG obviously isn’t interested in your deal, so SCREW OFF.
Okay, back to the topic:
).
GM for Mac would be wonderful! I’ve been following the news for a while, but never really got around to posting anything. Anyway, this is great news, because my PC that I have always used to run GM is really, REALLY slow right now, and my family just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro, so it would be AWESOME to have GM on it, as I am an avid GM user, and have been for 4 years now (I started when I was, like, 9
Anyway, I’ll try to send in an email for the beta, even though I’m sure they have as many testers as they want right now.
Also, that’s AWESOME news about GM for iPhone! I would TOTALLY get that, even if it was $100! Also, if they could make the logic similar (perhaps instead of mouse_x and mouse_y they could have finger_x and finger_y, or, for miltitouch, finger_x[1],finger_y[1], etc.) there would be hardly any learning curve! But I know that’s far, FAR into the future. For now I’ll be quite happy if they simply release GM for Mac
*phew!* Long post!
April 7th, 2009 at 3:23 am
Well, not “news” exactly, but just the possibility of a GM for iPhone exites me
July 17th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
i would like to do it if it will run on a 10.2.8 mac ( or classic 9.2.2 ) 377 megahertz with max of 800 by 600 resaloution
