Testing the Sprite Editor

13 Apr, 2009

As you probably know we are actively working on version 8.0 of Game Maker. One of the major changes will be that sprites and background with alpha-transparency (like in PNG files) are supported throughout the maker program. This will in particular included an extended sprite editor and a completely rewritten image editor.

You can now test a preliminary version of the sprite and image editor and provide us with bug reports and feedback. Please note that this is only meant for testing. Read the provided Readme document for more information. Don’t report your bugs and suggestions here! Send them by email, as indicated in the Readme file.

You can download the test version of the sprite editor here: Test Image Editor

Please note that no release date for Game Maker 8.0 has been set and that is will definitely take a couple of months before a beta version will become available. Don’t ask us about it or about other features at the moment. There will be ample opportunities for this in the future.

I has some nice features.. like the glow. But it seems rather weird that the eraser uses alpha tranparentcy when the pencil doesn’t..

Its okay, a little hard to use though. Is there a help document to it?

Wow, very nice and much more advanced. I really like it I’m just not used to it yet (the button placements).

The PNG support makes it awsome alone.
But the new features are really nice(glow, shadow and skew are great). I look forward to using those in my games :)

Awesome, that editor is really nice and way better than the current one. I’ve been using other image editors in order to create games/etc… with game maker but now I guess the included image editor will be the one I’ll use as there’s most of the features I want :D

Congratulations to all of you guys at yoyogames!

yeah, they said not to ask about features, but I am always waiting for a layer editor like in RPG Maker. I am sick of putting characters in a special combination to have him pass on top of an object and below an object.

cool and sweet and newer functions and the skewing helps make my iso tiles making easier and ISO platforms etc and ISO games and maybe with layers and all for ISO characters this might just work.
Thnx soo much Mark Overmarrs I will treasure this image editor.

  18. nikechure Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 7:04 am

    @x_rus_x
    GameMaker already has layers.
Every object/tileset can change it’s layer by changing it’s “depth” value (for objects) and “layer” value (for tiles). You have unlimited number of layers!

If you mean layers in the sprite editor (judging by your post, you don’t), they aren’t really needed that much.

  19. Joerdgs Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 8:06 am

    @nikechure

Multiple layers in the sprite editor would come in handy for animating seperate ‘objects’ within the sprite. Now I’m always constructing layered in an external image editor (like Paint.NET) and copy pasting each frame in the sprite editor.

    Very Awesome !!
that really great improvements for game maker, although I’m concern about collisions with alpha channel how would be like!?

  23. Mr JAk HAk Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

The thing that bothers me is whenever you draw something that is anti-aliased, and have replace marked instead of blend, it leaves noise all around the object you are drawing (especially obvious with the circle).

I think this would be remedied if there was a situation in which the anti-aliased pixels only replace the pixel below if their alpha value is higher than that below them.

  24. nikechure Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

    @Joerdgs
Oh, I know just how incredibly handy layers are.
I just think that GM doesn’t really need it that much. Plus, we were told not to post suggestions here.

  25. Bluish-Green Productions Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 3:40 am

I think the eraser and drawing tool should show their exact size. Otherwise, great update!
    Most happy about:
    ~Multiple Undos
    ~Unlimited zoom

  26. skarik Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 4:09 am

This is very handy. Thanks to the zoom, I can now get the pixel precision I want and zoom out to preview quickly. The dragging, what I use most, is much improved.

I think that there’s finally a use for the ‘external image editor’ option in Game Maker. Well, until GM8 comes out.

  27. Orangepickle Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 7:09 am

This is really good. When I use the selection tool, I can’t go back over something i have already selected.

  28. Caniac Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 11:46 am

    @Sharik!
    Thats what it is called!
Yes, I am so gonna use that!
but I don’t know if the game application it’s self will support the .png files.

  29. Yoshermon Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

This thing is really cool, I just barely downloaded it and already I can see some things that would be handy in Game Maker!
I am not all that familiar with alpha channels and stuff, however I did find something I can understand wonderfully. The tolerence bar is wonderful!! I’ve always hated how the fill tool only gets the exact color and leaves little pixels behind, and the tolerance feature lets the fill tool work on similar colors to the color you’re filling on! I’m pretty sure that this feature is found in other image editors besides paint, but the fact that it’s going to appear in GM8 gets me really excited!

  30. redrover Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

    prinsu-kun:
There will probably be a value you can set that decides the minimum transparency for a collision.

  31. mrsmes Says:
    April 16th, 2009 at 4:01 am

You know people know if the program is made with GM and it freezes after 4 hours, I know a way of finding if something was programmed if you notice it loads faster than a GM application or also sometimes takes half a minute after loosing focus and then to regain focus and get back on track and fully functioning to do it’s job but personally if both errors could be erased and like that which I will make possible, then that would mean a world of difference.

yeah true that to but one question, do they ever look at the bugs reported and all that and fix them!!!? or are they currently busy right now and working on something in the project first?. What is more important that first or removing bugs and then moving on to the next thing and making sure nothing has a bug in it or a single error?.

    April 19th, 2009 at 7:03 am

if the background is transparent you cant make a circle and fill it,it will fill al the image.you cant make any form and fill it because it will fil al the image. But this happends only with transparent background. This is the only bug i detected.i hope that this wil be fixed.

Here’s an idea for 8.0. with tiles, (or even other things too!) you could be able to click and drag, making a large square of tiles with ease, rather than going through one by one and clicking each square :)

  58. mrsmes Says:
    April 23rd, 2009 at 3:21 pm

the image editor is great aside from the previous mentioned and reported errors(bugs what ever you call them) but still, now well I am impressed but, one thing Oh darn it how amazing I’ll have my analog clock for my dock ending up being 96 x 96 pixels and having it’s numbers in line I do so still hope that they keep that feature in GM8.0 to use xscale and yscale so i can halve the analog clock down to 48 by 48 so it won’t be too big to fit on the panel for the dock, but using my xscale=0.5 yscale=0.5 technique I should be able to pull a tight squeeze I’ll go test with a non .png image in the room that size in a different project. This might work but it would be tough, perhaps a function for GM to stretch the sprite to a specific size. Second thoughts a tight squeeze in that spare gap by that logo with good positioning might just work.

  59. mrsmes Says:
    April 23rd, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Although barely 4 pixels above the bin object might be the ticket out of here, for placing it correctly, also 4 pixels to the left of the ‘ THE HAWK’S DOCK ‘ Logo, directing to the MR.SMES! Website.

  60. mrsmes Says:
    April 24th, 2009 at 5:39 am

could be a close trim but may be just, I might have a ace or 2 up my sleeves.

  61. oneboyandhistooth Says:
    April 24th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

This is what an update should be like; the alpha channel functionality is excellent, and the demo is actually rather useful in its own right as a PNG editor, but what I’d really like to see is some sort of sprite “ghosting” function (i.e the ability to see previous subimages; it would make animation a lot easier). Plus, the preset morph animation is really just a crossfade and hence rather cheap.

  62. mrsmes Says:
    April 25th, 2009 at 2:03 am

what ever it is still rather neat instead of whining show us something better you can make if you can, no PWN intended but I highly doubt you could make a image editor.

I won’t have the opportunity to download this beta sprite editor, but I do have one comment. It absolutely *must* contain a feature that lets you “wrap” pixels drawn on one side of the image to the other. Thus making the creation of tiled textures much quicker.

  68. Mr JAk HAk Says:
    April 29th, 2009 at 12:53 am

So, I guess when you send bugs and suggestions to the email address you don’t get a reply. That’s a little odd. It makes me feel like my input was useless.

Hi guys, just wondering: are there any planned revisions of the Game Maker Language? I feel it is very under powered for what Game Maker has expanded to. I think a dynamic OOP approach would be very appropriate, seeing as GM already has dynamic typing. As well, I think it’d be better for everyone if the Game Maker source file wasnt merely tacked onto the exe, but compiled into a bytecode representation first (as I understand it, you guys are currently using slow Abstract Syntax Trees)

Much better effects, like the glow and skew effect.
Also, the resizing system has a better quality when I resize than GM&’s resizing, even when I set it to poor.
    I’m also glad I didn’t find any glitches. :)
