Want to Win $250 ??, then Design a new logo for Game Maker 8 !!

28 Sep, 2009

We reckon the Game Maker logo is looking a bit “Tired” (thanks to http://twitter.com/Brad_T for reminding us !).  SO with the launch of  Game Maker 8 we’ve decided it would be a good time to have a new logo.

We don’t have a lot of time to get this integrated with some of the Website work that we’re doing, so I need to severely limit the time available to submit your designs.

We’re looking for a design that is more modern, communicates the vitality and excitement of what Game Maker stands for and fits better with the rest of the YoYo Games Branding.

Deadline for submissions is 9 am (GMT) MONDAY, OCTOBER 26th (i.e. four weeks from Today).  I need a high quality BITMAP (minimum size 640 X 480), winner will be announced by November 1st and the prize is $250 (you MUST have a PayPal account to receive the prize money).  YoYo Games will own the rights to the winning logo, so do not submit any entries of you don’t agree to YoYo Games having complete and absolute ownership of your competition entry.

Submit your entries to newlogo@yoyogames.com

The Five “runners-up” will get a free copy of Game Maker 8 Pro.

@gnysek Why would anyone expect it earlier than November if we only issued a release candidate last week ?

Any special reason it has to be BITMAP instead of PNG? PNG has better transparency ya know ;)

One question – are you looking for just the circular logo (currently the grey hammer in the red sphere) or something more like the image in Game Maker Blog’s post (click the name of comment/trackback 4)?

@gnysek…..maybe, but Game Maker 7 launched months after the final RC. Mainly because of the awkward timing of the YYG announcements…this time the delay will mostly be because none of us want to use Softwrap !!! This means we need to do website stuff and will only start coding this week.

@caniac Bitmap gives us a base to do JPEG, PNG etc… also more likely we can make minor detail adjustments to tone/colour etc with Bitmap….

If the creator has a vector version of the file as well, that would be even more useful than a bitmap, I would think.

Are there any elements that have to be in it? Would it be ideal to produce a simple logo sans text, and also have a grander, larger version with “Game Maker” and maybe “Easy Game Creation” on it? Also, what about an Icon?

  14. sandy Says:
    September 28th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

@rusky, for now a BitMap will do @JAk HAk…clue No 2, Logos using the words “easy Game Creation” will also look like the old one….logos usually don’t use too many words.

lol – after seeing some of the few games that are exceptional, I’m sure you’ll get tons of good submissions, lot of talent – As far as people who cry about it being allegedly released in November, be thankful it gets released this year – I’ve taken that out of my mind, realistically thinking I would assume it would be released in Q1′2009 – Won’t be mad about that if it means more time for dev. As to Sandy, you DO realise that even a home made activation system will NOT stop people from using cracks ? Certainly has not stopped all symantec, Adobe, and other big names from being victims of piracy, just so you know – I keep reading on other blogs people ALREADY discussing about a GM8 compiler, it bloody makes me sick to see so many people want to STEAL from a company that sells a product for $25 – really gets to me, but anyways.

As far as the contest, that’s a good initiative to INCLUDE users in the development of GM – I hope that the NEXT step will be to fix some limiting issues remaining like frame tearing, speed & audio, I guess that will be a positive step, see this is what I’ve been saying, there is big potential for GM, just wish they can be tapped quicker. If I was familiar with Delphi or C or whatever, I would have GLADLY donated my time FREE to help YYG – this is how much I want to see GM grow.

    Very generous prizes too !

  16. Trollsplatterer Says:
    September 28th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Well, I guess it would have to be quite a simple logo if it would still be clear when resized to an icon. Text would be unreadable at that size.

@sandy, I believe NAL was referring to http://gamemakerblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/game-maker-7-logo-300×178.png , are we redesigning that or just the red ball?

  19. Legolas710 Says:

This is a great idea! Thanks for the nice opportunity Sandy.

@scoz, I’d think that we’re redesigning the whole thing. I’m not sandy though, so don’t trust me.

@scoz…I want a completely new logo. Replacing the red ball still leaves us with some ugly bits !

  26. sandy Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 8:36 am

Wow…we’ve had a lot of entries already !!

    1. Don’t send email to the newlogo@yoyogames.com UNLESS it is a competition submission. We won’t monitor this alias.

    2. Take your time…. you have almost 4 weeks to submit a response !

    3. The letter combination of GM is a trademark for some car company…so unlikely we’ll choose a logo with just those 2 letters !

  27. scoz Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 8:36 am

@sandy, I think the question was more of a case of usage, the large logo with the blue and yellow bits is more of a press logo, whereas the red ball by itself is used for the program’s icon. So, which purpose are we designing for, the functional “icon” that needs to be scaled down, or the large “crest”? I ask because some logos that would look awesome as a crest just don’t scale down well.

Regardless, I’m about to send off two. I don’t think I’ve hit one I really like yet, but you have to be in it to win it :D

  28. sandy Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 8:41 am

I’m looking to replace them both with a single graphic that I can use in any Game Maker situation…web page, book, press release etc… I can always add the words “Game Maker” later, so I guess the answer is I’m looking more for the red ball…but I won’t be keeping the other bits !!

  29. Penthia Pertion Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

I’m sending one….I don’t know if I should take away the text or not, but I think it came out pretty good. Still, I’ll probably end up making a couple more before I’m completely satisfied.

  30. stegarootbeer Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Ok, no motto.the I’ve got a perfect place for a version number or somthing. Would you like that on there or leave the space for it blank so you guys can add it so it will still be usable for other versions of gamemaker?

  31. gibbersoft Says:
    September 29th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

I don’t like you want bitmaps. Is it ok if you give you Photoshop files instead? Transparency is important. Everyone know that.

  32. T-Bird Says:
    September 30th, 2009 at 1:45 am

Sandy – I know you’re leaving this up to our creative prowess, but I had a couple of questions.

Currently GM is associated with the colors red and blue, while YYG is green. Any preferences on color choice for the new logo?

Also, just to clear this up, does the design necessarily need to include the words Game Maker, GM, or some other indication of the program name, or do you just want a logo and are unconcerned about the words themselves?

  33. mrsmes Says:
    September 30th, 2009 at 6:59 am

640 by 480 is a little big and distorted don’t you think?

  34. sandy Says:
    September 30th, 2009 at 8:25 am

@gibbersoft send a bitmap for now. If you win, then we can sort out details later. We will probably pass the winning design to our agency anyway. The design is the most important thing.
@stegarootbeer you can use version numbers if you think it adds something to your design.
@T-Bird don’t get hung up on colours, choose what you think looks great.
@mrsmes we will scale it, you don’t have to use exactly 640X480

Well good thing I read everything before posting, eh?

Anyway, I did a bit of brainstorming last night, and I think I’ve got some good ideas.

So now I have another question – are there any rules about posting logos on blogs or websites prior to the judging?

  40. Trollsplatterer Says:
    October 1st, 2009 at 10:27 pm

I don’t see why they should have a problem with that. It’s not like competition games, where popularity is taken into account.
Posting your logo’s somewhere else would only be publicity for Game Maker, wouldn’t it?

  41. FredFredrickson Says:
    October 1st, 2009 at 11:17 pm

I agree, but I wanted to make sure first. If I throw some stuff together, I might throw it up on my blog, just as a look into my creative process. :)

  42. Aviox Says:
    October 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 am

While You’re at it, you should think of changing the name of Game Maker. Maybe just adding another word to the equation so people still know what you are. Like _______ Game Maker. YoYo Game Maker sounds a little bit cheezy, but YGM isn’t bad. I think you get the idea.

  43. sandy Says:
    October 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 am

@FredFredrickson @Trollsplatterer You can post your ideas wherever you like…but in this case I’ll make a judgement call on what I think are my 10 or so favourites and share them with Mark and a few of the other guys and we’ll make a quick decision on our favourite. There are no extraneous variables that will influence our decision !

@Avlox nice suggestion…but we’ll start with the logo for now !!

Are we allowed to use old game characters (such as pac man) in our logos? I understand that you will not be selling your logo, but is it still legal? I notice that the current logo has pac man shaped objects ‘pushed’ into the bottom of the logo.

Its been a while since we have had a game competition which I understand with all the work going into game maker 8 and I happy game maker 8 is finally coming out. This has also gave me a lot of time to study Game maker and now I actually have a chance when the next competition comes out.
