GM4Mac….work has restarted !

27 Jan, 2010

Good news for Mac users …we’ve contracted with a new developer to support the previous contractor who has also agreed to stay with us and finish the work on GM4Mac.  We’ve effectively doubled the effort we had before and work has started on getting the bugs fixed.  We should hopefully have a release candidate ready in a month or two.  I’ll keep you updated here.

Awesome. Glad to hear. I know what a pain it is to pick up someone else’s coding where the one left off; therefore, to have the old developer back, -with- help… that’s great. Probably a load of stress of YYG’s backs, too!

I may not use a mac, but hey hooray! always good to hear stuff like this happening. I would hope and think the mac one could use the files of games made on windows, and vise versa. I believe with other programs Ive seen it works fine. Key code? I’m gonna think its the same, since that kind of thing isn’t PC, Mac, Linux related, Websites do that kind of thing all the time and its the same key code.

well congratulations again. Can’t wait and see what some Mac users ideas will be.

Do you know if it’ll be able to open GMK files from the Windows GM8, perchance, or is it still going to just be version 7?

  24. EbTech Says:
    January 30th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Cool! You may as well restart the project based on GM8 instead of GM7. A lot of Mac users are artists, so the new sprite editor and PNG support are a must.

I’d still be happy even if GM4Mac were still based off of GM7. The even better news here is we now know that the planned simultaneous release for GM9 for both Mac & PC will be assured now with two developers on the job.

If GM4Mac is released, I am assuming that if the .gmk file created from the Windows version can be opened from the Mac version of Game Maker, and published into a .app file that can be opened on Macs.

However, not every Windows user has a Mac, and vice versa. So you should either make a Version 8a that has both “Create Windows Executable” and “Create Mac Application”, or make some kind of downloadable converter that can publish .gmk into Mac version, or a Windows version if you are using only Mac.

Does it mean that if I make a game with my Windows GM, I will be able to give that game to a mac user and he will be able to play it ?

  30. PlasticineGuy Says:
    February 6th, 2010 at 1:14 am

You will have to provide the GMK file.

  31. Didi Says:
    February 9th, 2010 at 4:32 am

I was talking about giving the game to players who have a mac. Will only the mac version be able to make games for mac, and only the windows version to make games for windows ? or will we be able to make a game once and just compile it twice so we can give both two versions on our website ?

  32. sandro Says:
    February 10th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Going by the last beta: GM4Mac in currently in version 7. So it will accept the Windows .gmk files for version 7. It is to my knowledge that it will also take the windows GM7 reg-keys. Expect only the compatibility Between GM8 and GM7 to be with GM8 and the Mac GM7.

As of now, only the windows version of Gamemaker can create .exes and only the Mac version can create .apps. Sandy mentioned earlier about MABY fixing this, but their more concerned with getting the program released and possible adding that later.
As a temporary fix, you should be able to make a game in GM7 make the exe, then bring the gmk over to mac, and make the .app. As of now this would require 2 computers, but I’m sure there are some people on the GMC(myself included) who would compile the .app for you if you don’t have a mac.

I’m considering getting rid of my Windows XP Partition if the Mac port of GM is useful, as in it can open .gmk’s made in the Windows Version of Game Maker since that’s all I use Windows for now, these days on my Netbook.

Please say there will be Tiger support. I know it’s outdated but it performs so smoothly on my Netbook.

I now have a mac (I meant to keep my windows laptop but am selling to parents instead). Aside from a few little things, GM is the only thing I miss on a Mac.

When is GM4Mac coming out, because the last bugtracker post said:

“We’re making good progress clearing out the bugs we know of with GM4Mac. We expect to have a release candidate available in the next month.” – 2010-02-23 09:52 – sandy

and there hasn’t been any posts or anything since, it’s looking very abandoned
